Overview

This is a sturdy, no frills zero turn mower from Husqvarna with a couple interesting features I wish we’d see on more mowers. Let’s take a deeper look.

Riding Comfort

A 15″ high back seat provides some riding comfort on this Husqvarna Z254 zero turn mower. Nothing special about the seat, just a pretty normal mower seat.

For those of you that like mowing in the dark there is a headlight in the center of the front of the mower.

There is a cup holder on the left side with a small compartment behind the cup holder where you could put a phone or other small items.

This unit also comes equipped with an hour meter and service interval reminder which is a nice feature to have.

Engine

The Husqvarna Z254 mower comes with a Kohler 7000 series engine that has 26 HP and is 747cc. This is generally regarded as a pretty decent engine, especially at this price point.

You have a 3.5 gallon gas tank which is a fair enough size for a mower rated to do around 2 or 3 acres.

Mower Handling and Performance

WARNING: You should always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for mowing hills, usually that means don’t mow a slope over 15 degrees. Try to attack the slope in an up and down manner instead of side to side (if you have to lean halfway off the mower to feel stable you’re probably exceeding recommendations!)

The Husqvarna Z254 mower sits on 11″ wheels up front and 18″ 4-ply tires in the rear. The 4 ply is nice because it is less apt to punctures. However, it would have been nice to see some 20″ tires back there.

The transaxles are Hydro-Gear ZT-2200 which are a sealed unit. I understand the price point of this unit makes it nearly impossible to include a better transaxle but I’m a little worried this mower is a bit on the bigger side for these transaxles (my opinion only), especially long term for people that have hilly properties. Still, it’s a decent setup.

Max forward speed is 6.5 MPH and reverse speed is 3.2 MPH.

The frame itself is made of all 1.5″ to 2″ steel tubing so it is nice and sturdy.

For those of you with a gate or shed and are wondering what width you can get away with, this mower is 56″ wide with the discharge chute up.

Quality of Cut

The Husqvarna Z254 with 54″ deck consists of 12 gauge stamped steel and a reinforced bottom edge.

There are 3 blades to chop your grass blades to smithereens. Deck adjustment consists of an easy to move handle on the right side with 6 settings of cutting height between 1.5″ to 4″.

Two nice features on this mower that I wish were standard on every mower:

4 anti scalping wheels. So there are two wheels on the front and two wheels on the back of the deck. I never understood why more mowers aren’t setup like this. If you think about mowing wavy terrain, the deck is going to be at a point where when it reaches a valley the front two scalping wheels are going to be doing the work while the back of the deck could drop down too far and scalp.

This is finally a solution to this (not that it still work all the time) but good on Husqvarna for doing this. The Husqvarna Z254 is the first mower I’ve ever seen do this.

The other nice feature, which I have seen on other models is the removable deck pan where you rest your feet. This option just makes it so much easier to clean out debris or change a belt if you need to.

Great options on a zero turn mower that is already at a pretty decent price point.

Accessories

There is no standard garden hitch included on this mower, but you could certainly add one. Though it is not recommended to tow much if anything with a zero turn mower.

Conclusion

All in all I was fairly impressed with the Husqvarna Z254 zero turn mower. It’s at a very competitive price for the options it offers. Bigger engine, large cutting deck, beefy frame, etc.

For a residential user you are covered by a 3 year warranty.

While there are other mowers that look prettier, I think this mower offers very good bang for your buck.
